Basics Of Bow Windows
Bow windows can be an absolutely stunning feature to a home. They are a series of 3 or more windows that are either mulled together, framed out with each window having their own opening or come as a pre-fabricated unit. However they are assembled, they form a gradual curve or arch that extends out from a home. They get their name from the basic shape of a bow - as in bow and arrow (was this obvious? we didn't get it at first...).
Bow windows can be fairly simple or they can be quite an elaborate project. Certain set ups can use 4, 5, 6 or more windows that are different types of windows like single hungs or casements to provide variation and ventilation into the home. Many high end bow window projects stick with a fixed or non movable style for a classic, uniform look. These projects would use a wood interior to really show off each frame and make the bow a focal point of a living or dining room.

Pricing out windows is tough for a project like this because a custom project with 6 windows is going to be expensive. Andersen sells their bow windows for $1500 to $2300, while Soft-Lite Gorell sells their vinyl exterior, wood interior for around $1300.

A normal replacement project will run $1000 for the installation portion. One of the reasons for the high cost is that it typically require 3 or 4 installers to take out the existing unit and get down to the rough opening. Then the bow has to be put in and properly attached using a cable system or bracket (depends on how the manufacturer puts it together).
