Middle-Range Affordability

I am busy shopping around at the moment for windows, but feel the Sunrise Vanguard and Restoration are just out of reach when it comes to budget. Does anyone have any recommendations on quality middle-range windows in the Alabama area?

[Contractor Response]

There are two names that come to mind that should be available in your area. The first is the PlyGem or Great Lakes. These are solid windows, while there is also the Vytex Fortis windows. While I haven't installed them personally, I believe they do offer good performance numbers and may be worth looking at.

Vytex Potomac vs. Soft-Lite Imperial LS

I have two quotes for windows at my property. The first is for the Vytex Potomac and the second is the Soft-Lite Imperial LS. Our local supplier only offers the Vytex and this supplier comes highly recommended on Angie's List. The prices are similar, so I was wondering if there is anything I need to know about, maybe seal issues?

[Contractor Response]

I know the Soft-Lite windows well and have installed a number of them, but never installed the Vytex, though looking at their brochure, they look very solid windows. I believe the Potomac is their top range window. If it were up to me I would go with the Soft-Lite Imperials, because I know they offer excellent performance. If you have a HiMark dealer in your area, you may want to have a look at them before making a final decision.

Overall a Good Window

We installed Vytex awning and casement windows using Hallmark a few years ago. Overall I must say I am impressed, our utility bill has reduced with our single pane windows. We have had some problems with the cranks which stick from time to time and I wouldn't say they are the smoothest windows in the world. Only one seal has broken out of all the windows and I have been offered a free replacement, I only have to pay the $175 for labor.

I can only sing the praise of the installers who installed our Vytex windows through Hallmark. I had thirty six windows replaced costing around $14,576, that's about $404 for each window. I had quotes from Thompson Creek which came in at $49,564 and then offered a discount for three referrals, what a joke. I am happy with the Vytex windows and wouldn't hesitate recommending them.

Great Noise Reduction

I have only had my new windows in a few weeks and I am so impressed with the noise reduction that they offer. I haven't been able to notice their energy efficiency yet, that is still to come, though I am expecting some reduction in my utility bill. While the double hung windows work really well I am not overly impressed with the casement mechanics, they aren't very smooth."

I can only put these windows is the average category, maybe a little higher. The installation was really good, but they didn't replace the rotten wood as promised. The price was great and the lowest of the three quotes I had received. They cost about $450 per window. I must say I am happy with my choice when combining the quality of the window and the good price.
