Double hung costs are right in the middle of the road, which makes sense since they are arguably the most popular style of window on the market. Their closely related cousin, single hungs, are catching up in popularity due to their comparable energy efficiency numbers. The cost difference between single and double hung is also small, perhaps $50 less per window.
Pricing For The Window Itself
Entry Level: $175 - $300
These will often be found in the big box stores like Lowes or Home Depot. They are going to use a lower end vinyl extrusion and simple clear glass package or a low end low-e glass. Don't expect lots of options or choices in this cost range.
Mid Range: $300 - $500
Mid range products will usually come from local window companies and distributors and will either be a well made vinyl or a stripped down aluminum or fiberglass frame. There should be a nice mid range glass package which will translate into decent performance numbers. There will certainly be more frame and hardwae options at this price.
High End: $500 - $700
The premium double hungs will usually be a wood interior with a vinyl, fiberglass or aluminum cladding on the outside. Expect good performance numbers and a excellent glass package, along with tons of options in terms of features, frame finish, colors and hardware.
Installation Cost: $50 to $350
The normal cost of installation for a replacement window will run $125 per opening. This might involve removing the stops (possible the sills), measuring and leveling the window, shimming the window and securing it inside the frame, adding insulation, caulking and sealing the window and replacing the stops.
