Basics Of Awning Windows
An awning window has a hinge across the top of the window that allows it to swing out and up. When open, the window resembles an awning. They are nice looking windows, although some of the lower end units can look a little funky with how the window opens. They typically look better from the outside than the inside. Top end awnings use better hardware and a better crank system that takes care of any awkwardness of how it looks.
Most window manufacturers make awnings, although they certainly don't sell as many units as other types. Awnings aren't that tough to find, but they aren't the most common window out there. Many homeowners have awnings and when they go to replace them, they opt for another type of window, often a casement for the better seal compression and better ventilation features.
Entry Level Awnings
Lower end awning windows will be a low grade vinyl with plastic hardware, a simple glass package and probably very few options on the frame color or finish. Sample manufacturers include Alside Excaibur, Amsco Studio Series and the entry level window from Window World.

Mid Range Awnings
Mid range anwings will either be a premium vinyl frame or an aluminum or fiberglass window without lots of upgrades. Homeowners could expect some nice upgrades from the base model (better locking mechanism, vent stops, weep hole covers etc.) as well as a nicer glass package. Sample manufacturers at this mid range price point include Simonton, Amerimax and ProVia.

Hig End Awnings
High end awnings should be fiberglass, aluminum or wood clad windows from a well known manufacturer, a nice upgraded glass package (maybe tempered glass), quality metal hardware, custom sizing and installation as well as a nice array of color and finish options. Sample manufacturers at this mid range price point include Pella, Marvin and Hurd.
